LFS Update: A Response to the March Blizzard in Fremont, NE

On March 19, Nebraska experienced a blizzard that left many residents of Fremont without power and prompted Dodge County to be declared a disaster area. In the midst of such challenging circumstances, the spirit of community resilience shone brightly. Last week, local organizations and dedicated individuals supported those affected by the ongoing power outages.

Fremont Beef, Lincoln Premium Poultry, and Hy-Vee stepped up to donate essential supplies and food, ensuring that our community members had access to nourishment during this trying time. Numerous food trucks and local volunteers set up grills and provided meals at no cost, embodying the essence of neighborly support.

As part of the relief efforts, facilities such as Planet Fitness, Salvation Army, and the YMCA generously opened their doors, offering showers to the public based on community needs. This collaborative response helped address immediate needs and fostered a sense of unity among residents.

In addition to those efforts, LFS Fremont and First Lutheran Church provided vital supplies, including diapers, hygiene items, and blankets, to families residing in Fremont’s Meadowbrook and Regency trailer parks. LFS team members—Katelynn Jones, Adriana Miramontes, and Miriam Berganza—worked tirelessly to deliver basic necessities, safety information, and assistance with applications for replacement food. Similarly, LFS employees Sandra Acero, Amanda Kimball, and Tina Avis played a crucial role at the First Lutheran Warming/Charging site, ensuring that families received the care they needed.

As the situation evolved, LFS joined the Dodge County Long Term Recovery Teams meetings starting Thursday. These meetings served as a platform to assess the community’s most pressing needs and facilitate ongoing support efforts.

We are relieved to share that power is being restored and recovery efforts are wrapping up. Dodge County disaster funds are being allocated to families on a case-by-case basis through collaboration with the Fremont Family Coalition Partnership. “It was inspiring to see how businesses, churches, and organizations in Fremont came together to offer their time, services, and supplies,” said Tina Avis, LFS Care and Service Coordinator. “Additionally, city officials, school administrators, faith ministerial groups, previous disaster case managers, nonprofits, healthcare entities, banks, and local radio stations all collaborated effectively. It truly was a remarkable coming together.”

In times like these, our community’s strength and compassion truly shine. LFS holds the residents of Fremont in our hearts and is grateful to have played a part in ensuring that everyone remained safe during this difficult period. A profound thank you goes out to our fantastic team and all our partners who collaborated to uplift our community through acts of kindness and solidarity.

Together, we’ve proven that even in the face of adversity, we can support one another.
