How To Support Refugee and Immigrant Programs at LFS

We can’t do it alone. We continue the important work of supporting refugees and immigrants at Lutheran Family Services as they begin new lives in Nebraska, and we need your help. There are three main ways to support our programs: Sponsorship, Volunteering and Donations. See how you can get involved today.

Sponsorship

Each year, families fleeing war, persecution, and hardship arrive in Nebraska seeking safety and a fresh start. Lutheran Family Services (LFS) welcomes these newcomers with essential support including housing, English language learning, and help navigating unfamiliar systems.

Sponsorship is a powerful way to walk alongside refugee families during this transition. Community groups–such as faith communities, schools, and other partners–work with LFS to help families build confidence, stability, and connection.

Whether you prepare a home as part of a Welcome Team, mentor families on a Support Team, or provide deeper assistance as a Sponsor Team, your commitment creates lasting impact. By sponsoring a refugee family, you help turn uncertainty into stability, isolation into belonging, and hope into opportunity—ensuring Nebraska is not just a place of refuge. Still, a place families can truly call home.

Volunteering

Volunteers support newly arrived refugee families by mentoring, setting up homes, shopping for essentials, assisting with walk‑in days, providing sponsorship support, and providing transportation.
In 2025, nearly 100 volunteers across Nebraska contributed 2,391.6 hours of support, making a meaningful impact on LFS’s refugee resettlement work.

Donations

When refugee families arrive in Nebraska, they often come with only a few personal belongings, making the process of rebuilding a home from scratch both overwhelming and costly. Donating household items and home‑setup essentials allows LFS to prepare safe, fully furnished living spaces that offer comfort, dignity, and a sense of belonging from the moment families walk through the door. Each donated bed, dish set, towel, or lamp helps transform an empty apartment into a welcoming home and eases the financial burden during the critical first months of resettlement. These contributions give families the stability they need to focus on employment, education, and healing as they begin their new lives. Your generosity becomes part of a communitywide effort to ensure that every family arriving in Nebraska is met with compassion, hospitality, and the practical support that makes a fresh start possible.
