What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the gold standard treatment for people who experience suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors and borderline personality disorder (BPD). In DBT, we define BPD as an extreme and chronic sense of being out of balance or dysregulated in five areas:
- Emotional: Intense, unpredictable mood swings, problems identifying and managing emotions, too much or too little anger, or ongoing feelings of fear, guilt, or shame.
- Interpersonal: Chaotic, unstable, intense relationships, fear of abandonment, difficulty keeping relationships, burned bridges.
- Self: Identity disturbance, poor sense of self, emptiness, inability to predict your reactions or preferences.
- Behavioral: Suicidal and intentional self-harming behaviors, impulsivity, substance use.
- Cognitive: Dissociative responses, spacing out, going numb, paranoia, inability to think clearly or make decisions, inability to tell the difference between feelings and reality.
If this sounds familiar, you or someone you care about may qualify for LFS’ DBT Program. DBT at LFS is available to people ages 19 and older who qualify for it. Eligible people usually commit to at least 12 months of engagement with the program.
