At Lutheran Family Services (LFS), we understand the value of simply checking in on someone who may be struggling. So, we have created the LFS Holiday Check-In Challenge. All you need to do is reach out to a friend once a week until New Year’s. This simple action can make a world of difference for those who are battling depression or loneliness.
Here’s how: check in with a friend each week, share your challenge on social media using the hashtag #LFSCheckIn or tag LFS, and tag and challenge your friends to do the same. Together, we can spread joy and support during the holidays!
To help you check in on loved ones, we have created a list to inspire you.
1. Personalized Digital Cards or Videos
Create custom holiday greeting videos using your phone. This can be a simple video that can be sent via text. Digital cards are a quick and easy way to check-in. Sites like Hallmark offer a variety of digital cards that are free or paid. Remember to incorporate shared memories or inside jokes to make the message more meaningful.
2. Surprise Care Packages
Care packages are an excellent way to brighten someone’s day. If you’re doing some holiday baking, consider sending some of your delicious treats to someone to show them you care. Including a handwritten note, a photo collage, or an ornament can make the package even more special and help you connect with the recipient.
3. Host Virtual Holiday Hangouts
There are many ways to hangout online:
- Organize a virtual holiday gathering or movie night with loved ones
- Prep a holiday trivia party, cooking challenge, or a gift exchange via mail before the virtual meeting.
- Set up a virtual dinner party or baking session together.
Any of these could make a difference to someone lonely during the holidays.
4. DIY Gifts or Crafts
Are you crafty? Are you great at knitting, or do you specialize in making hand-painted mugs or homemade candles? Do you have kids who like to draw or paint? Simple craft projects can turn into treasured keepsakes. Add a little note, and you will be ready to go.
5. Countdown to the Holidays
Set up an advent calendar featuring small surprises or messages leading up to a special holiday. Share daily holiday-themed activities or challenges through text, email, or social media with friends and family.
6. Collaborative Playlist or Movie List
Create and share a holiday playlist with favorite tunes or songs with special meaning for your relationship. Not into music? Maybe movies are more your style. Compile a list of holiday movies and TV specials for a cozy watch party or a virtual get-together.
7. Virtual Cooking or Crafting Classes
At this time of year, there are many local and online classes available. Consider arranging one for yourself and a friend. You can learn a new holiday tradition together, such as baking gingerbread cookies or making DIY holiday wreaths. Participating in this kind of activity creates lasting memories; whether it turns out to be a baking disaster or a success, you will cherish the time spent together.
8. Send a Memory Jar
A memory jar is a collection of inspirational notes or quotes that you can collect throughout the year or put together quickly. Once your thoughts are written and collected, put them in a jar and gift them to a friend. You can also encourage others to contribute memories and reflections from the past year to make it a shared experience.
9. Plan a Coffee Break.
Whether you’re at home with your own coffee maker or at a local cafe, taking an hour to meet and talk can be incredibly helpful for someone who is struggling during the holidays.
10. Thoughtful Digital Gestures
During the holiday season, sending virtual hugs, quotes, or messages of appreciation through social media, texts, or email cards can go a long way in brightening someone’s day. Additionally, sharing digital artwork, e-books, or apps that bring joy can enhance the festive spirit.
