Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication Assisted Treatment: LFS Program Overview

Nebraska faces a growing challenge of addiction and overdose related to opioids and other prescription medications. In fact, Nebraska ranked in the top ten of all states for overdose deaths during the pandemic. To address the growing need, LFS has now expanded its Medication Assisted Treatment programs in Lincoln to include Fremont, which will more effectively address the growing demand for assistance and provide support to individuals dealing with various substance use disorders.

What is the Medication Assisted Treatment program?

Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) allows professionals to use medications, behavioral therapies, and counseling to provide a whole-person approach for those struggling with substance use disorders, including opioids, heroin, Fentanyl, alcohol, and tobacco use.

How does a Medication Assisted Treatment program work?

Individuals interested or referred to the MAT program will be seen for an evaluation with one of our advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) providers. If they meet the criteria, the client can then be prescribed medications to assist with their substance use disorder, often in combination with group and individual therapy and peer support.

MAT medications help curb cravings, lessen withdrawal symptoms, block opioid receptors, which decrease the effects of the substances, and prevent overdose.

Who does the Medication Assisted Treatment program help?

The MAT program is designed for individuals who have attempted other interventions and are still battling substance use, as well as for their families and the community. By decreasing the number of people grappling with substance use issues, we enable more individuals to gain employment and support themselves and their families. Additionally, we reduce local and state spending by decreasing emergency room visits, medical issues, and interactions with law enforcement.

Can people get assistance in person and online?

Through the LFS Client Portal, providers can see clients in person and through telehealth in a community or their homes. Telehealth is convenient for many clients who may live outside of city limits or do not have access to transportation.

How can people learn more about LFS’s program?
