I can never forget the contributions our refugees have made. After first being vetted, we offer them hope and safety. Women and children who have lost fathers and brothers. Mothers and girls who have been violated through rape as a tool of war. Most of all, those with Special Immigrant Visa status who have put their lives and their family’s lives at risk to serve us, saving American lives in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world.
Today I am reminded that I am an American Patriot, along with my son who served in Iraq. We are of Italian, Mexican, Swedish and Irish descent. All came to America seeking a better life. We all have that today because of everything America is still.
The Statue of Liberty weeps today. Will you watch and weep with her as those she welcomes are turned away, or will you answer her call and do the thing that you can do for these souls?
Nebraska is watching, the world is watching and humanity is waiting.
How will you respond?
