Did You Know? LFS Offers a Global Roots Farming Program for Refugees
Since 2020, Lutheran Family Services’ Global Roots program has been planting seeds of opportunity. This inspiring initiative supports refugees and new-population farmers by helping them grow culturally familiar foods while gaining food security and economic independence.
“This program provides resources to our refugees and new populations at LFS that they otherwise may not be able to receive,” says Sage Wilder, Global Roots Coordinator. “We supply the land, and they supply hard work and dedication to their plots.”
But Global Roots doesn’t stop at the soil. Through a partnership with Whispering Roots, a local nonprofit, produce is purchased from the farmers and then donated back to the community—feeding families and fueling futures.
What Global Roots Provides:
- Access to Land – Each farmer receives a 50 x 50-foot plot to cultivate.
- In-the-Field Agricultural Support – Farmers receive hands-on help with production, pest control, soil health, and harvesting.
- Tools and Equipment – Everything needed to farm effectively.
- Market Development – Helping farmers get their crops to the right buyers.
- Educational Workshops – Covering essential topics like crop rotation, seed starting, and food safety.
Global Roots By the Numbers:
- 200+ farmers enrolled since 2020.
- 6,000 pounds of food grown.
- 400+ family members fed through the program.
These numbers represent more than just statistics—they reflect lives changed, communities strengthened, and cultures preserved.
